Peran Pengasuh Sekolah Minggu Buddha dalam Meningkatkan Gaya Hidup You Only Need One (YONO): Studi Kasus Umat Buddha Generasi Z di Vihara Bodhisattva Lampung

Abstract


This study explores the role of Buddhist Sunday School (Sekolah Minggu Buddha/SMB) mentors in instilling the You Only Need One (YONO)  lifestyle—a minimalist concept aligned with frugal living principles—among Generation Z at Bodhisattva Temple in Lampung. Using a qualitative case study approach, data was collected through in-depth interviews, participatory observation, and document analysis, then analyzed using the Miles and Huberman model. Findings reveal that SMB mentors serve as moral educators and spiritual guides by integrating Buddhist teachings, particularly from the Sigalovada Sutta, Dighajanu Sutta, and Karaniya Metta Sutta, into learning activities. Values of simplicity, financial wisdom, and compassion are taught through exemplary modeling, interactive discussions, and hands-on practices. Although challenges exist, such as the influence of non-Buddhist environments and Gen Z's consumerist tendencies, collaboration with parents and contextual learning approaches strengthen the internalization of YONO values. The results indicate that this Dharma-based character education effectively fosters awareness of mindful, meaningful, and sustainable living. Consequently, the SMB mentoring model with a YONO approach can serve as a reference for developing Buddhist education curricula that address modern youth challenges.
