Abstract

Humans as social creatures, in fulfilling their life needs, are always in contact with other people. Building relationships is difficult for most people. As explained by Irwin Altman and Dalmas Taylor in Social Penetration theory, relationships occur through many stages. Altman and Taylor explain the process of building relationships between individuals with the image of Onion. The first stage of orientation is the outermost onion skin stage where individuals, when first building a relationship, communicate things of a general nature, for example asking their name or where they live. Furthermore, if individuals experience compatibility, it will continue to the second stage, namely exploratory affective, where at this stage the individual begins to express personal attitudes about topics discussed in general, then enters the third layer, namely the effective stage, where the individual begins to tell personal things, at this stage intimate touches and hugs can also occur. If you experience compatibility, the relationship becomes more intimate, known as the Stable Stage. However, if you do not experience compatibility then from the beginning of the orientation stage it is possible to experience the Depenetration stage or withdrawal of the relationship. The process of building relationships in social penetration theory is very interesting to study in more depth, in this case the researcher tries to compare the process of building relationships with a Buddhist perspective. Where many Tripitaka sources discuss how to build good relationships, where Buddha taught his followers not to rush into judging good things, wise people should examine good things and bad things, as well as in building relationships, sometimes someone looks good on the surface, not necessarily good inside, and vice versa.
